[comix:event] WIMP ATTACK: RYAN, HENDERSON, WEISSMAN IN L.A.

Wimp Attack!

NEWS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Los Angeles, California, April 26, 2003: The Gallery wing of the world-renowned Meltdown in Los Angeles will hold Meltdown’s latest art show, Wimp Attack!, featuring comic art luminaries on display from May 9 through June 1. The group show is aptly named Wimp Attack! and is a three-pronged battle of the brush queens – those queens being Johnny Ryan, Sam Henderson, and Steven Weissman. The show opening and artists’ reception will take place on Friday May 9 at 7pm at Meltdown, 7522 Sunset Boulevard between Fairfax and La Brea.

Son of Senator and Mrs. Bruce Weissman, Steven ("Ribs" to his friends) Weissman gave up a career in politics to devote time to his love of cartooning. In addition to regular appearances in Nickelodeon Magazine, his comics have been published in three Fantagraphics collections. CHAMPS, DON'T CALL ME STUPID, and WHITE FLOWER DAY are used by the military to teach soldiers how to tell humans from animals. His work has been lauded by three and a half presidents and earned him the coveted Silver Ladderback Prize from the Cucumber Foundation in 1998. He lives in Hollywood with his wife Charissa and quadruplets.

Johnson "Johnny" Ryan and his lovely fiancée (and celebrated artists' muse), Jenny Nixon, live off of Tony Millionaire's hand-me-downs in the fashionable Silverlake district of Los Angeles. When they're not shopping at Barney's or attending splashy premieres, Johnny phones in the occasional comic, while Ms. Nixon studies travel brochures and hosts craft nights for all the local comics widows, leaving the cartoonists all lonely and pathetic... just like they were before they were thirty. They have two gay cats and a gay refrigerator. Do titles like BLECKY YUCKERELLA and ANGRY YOUTH COMICS ring a bell, chump? Well, do they?

Sam Henderson is the legendary genius behind THE MAGIC WHISTLE comic book and Marlon Brando's weight gain. Sam almost started drawing comics in 1982, but it wasn't until 2001 that he finally took that big step and drew his first comic. When not sleeping with other comic book artist's wives, he's drawing hilarious comics and accepting all the credit for the success of the SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS cartoon program. He also had a Pulitzer Prize, but Art Spiegelman broke into his house one night and stole it. He thought the first bio we wrote for him was too crude. Well, la-dee-freakin'-da, Mr. Sensitive Funnyman!

Both Sam Henderson and Johnny Ryan were nominated on April 21 for the prestigious category of “Special Award for Humor” for The Harvey Awards for 2003 – Sam Henderson was nominated for the fifth consecutive year for his THE MAGIC WHISTLE comic book series from Alternative Comics – Johnny Ryan was nominated for the second consecutive year for his ANGRY YOUTH COMICS from Fantagraphics Books. The Harvey Awards are one of the comics industry’s oldest and most respected awards. The Harvey Awards recognize outstanding achievements in 24 categories, and are the only industry awards both nominated by and selected by the full body of comics professionals.

The Meltdown Gallery is the West Coast’s premiere showcase for comics related art. Future exhibits include work from cartoonists, mainstream to alternative, top illustrators, and fine artists. Meltdown located at 7522 Sunset Boulevard (between Fairfax and La Brea) in Los Angeles is celebrating 10 years in business. This 9,000 square foot store (the largest of its kind on the West Coast) offers a wide selection of comics, toys, children’s books, apparel, and a variety of other items from all over the world.

Hours: Meltdown opens each day at Noon except on Wednesdays when it opens at 10am. Meltdown closes at 7pm on Sundays and Mondays, closes at 9pm on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 10pm on Wednesdays.

[comix] THIS MONTH AT TOP SHELF: BLANKETS, UNLIKELY, COMIC BOOK ARTIST

From Chris Staros:

Can you believe it!? After four years in the making, what may well be the most highly-anticipated graphic novel in years – Craig Thompson's BLANKETS – is here! Not only that, we also have Jeffrey Brown's all-new graphic novel, UNLIKELY, and the fantastic second issue of COMIC BOOK ARTIST – all being solicited in the current MAY Diamond PREVIEWS catalog for books shipping to stores in July.

Please note that all three of these titles will move very quickly, so if you want 'em, be sure to ask your local retailer to advance order them for you.

***********************************

BLANKETS
by Craig Thompson

Here's what's already being said about BLANKETS:

"I thought it was moving, tender, beautifully drawn, painfully honest, and probably the most important graphic novel since JIMMY CORRIGAN." – Neil Gaiman

"Blankets officially confirms Craig Thompson's place in the world of graphic novels as one of the true greats." – Brian Michael Bendis

"In this book, Craig Thompson emerges as a young comics master. In the purest narrative form he tells a highly charged personal story, crammed with pain, discovery, hi-jinx, penance, religious conviction and its loss . and along comes self-loathing. In this story of family and first love, that which goes awry in life, goes well as art. Mr. Thompson is slyly self-effacing as he bowls us over with his mix of skills. His expert blending of words and pictures and resonant silences makes for a transcendent kind of story-telling that grabs you as you read it and stays with you after you put it down. I'd call that literature. – Jules Feiffer, Pulitzer Prize-Winner

"Craig has documented his youth in the most honest of ways. Not too warm and fuzzy nor too harsh and cold, showing us the insecurities of growing up in what is often a strange and sometimes painful world. The perfect marriage of words and pictures. It's as if Francois Truffaut had written and drawn his own comic with the artistry Will Eisner. His sense of timing is impeccable, always knowing when not to hit you with a heavy hand. It's the genuine article. – Bob Schreck, Group Editor, DC Comics

"Thompson's graphic novel debut, Good-bye, Chunky Rice, was a delicate parable of loss that garnered deserved acclaim. [This] eagerly awaited, follow-up to it is more ambitious, more accomplished, and more accessible... this is a genuine graphic novel, with a universal appeal.." – Gordon Flagg, Booklist, American Library Association

From the author of the critically-acclaimed and best-selling graphic novel, GOOD-BYE, CHUNKY RICE comes Craig Thompson's all-new masterpiece. Clocking in at 592 pages, BLANKETS may well be the single most anticipated graphic novel of the year. Wrapped in the landscape of a blustery Wisconsin winter, BLANKETS explores the sibling rivalry of two brothers growing up in the isolated country, and the budding romance of two coming-of-age lovers. A tale of security and discovery, of playfulness and tragedy, of a fall from grace and the origins of faith. A profound and utterly beautiful work.
-- $29.95 (US), 592 pages, 6 1/2" x 9 1/2", Deluxe Graphic Novel, ISBN 1-891830-43-0

"Blankets is one of the most ambitious original graphic novels ever produced in the medium . both universal and enlightening." – Peter
Siegel, www.artbomb.net

A preview of Blankets can be seen at artbomb.net:
http://www.artbomb.net/preview.jsp?t=blankets#

UNLIKELY
by Jeffrey Brown

"Mr. Brown seems to understand perfectly the day-to-day rhythms of the modern 'young adult' relationship. UNLIKELY, like his first book CLUMSY, is pretty much impossible to put down." – Dan Clowes

"Something about the way Jeffrey Brown draws these stories makes the saddest, dirtiest, most humiliating things that can possibly happen to a person seem weirdly innocent. The scratchy simplicity of the drawings makes the people in them all seem guileless and sweet. You feel like you're reading about some very well-meaning children who also happen to have sex, smoke pot and drink. Maybe it's just that Jeffrey Brown is a very nice man, and he projects this niceness onto everyone around him, even people who aren't treating him so well. You can open to any page and find something unusually bare and honest about these stories. They're surprising, even though half the moments in the book are ones you've probably experienced yourself. Hard trick to pull off." – Ira Glass, This American Life, NPR

UNLIKELY, the follow-up to Jeffrey Brown's self-published debut hit, CLUMSY, continues to explore the nature of relationships in this story of how Jeffrey Brown lost his virginity. A full-length graphic novel of excruciating detail and intimacy, drawn in an awkward style that both disarms the reader and heightens the emotional impact of the work.
-- $14.95 (US), 256 pages, 5" x 7 3/4", Graphic Novel, ISBN 1-891830-41-4

Portraits of Israelis and Palestinians:
For my Parents

By Seth Tobocman

Trade Cloth/120 pgs
Price: 15.95
Available April 2003

During the summer of 2002, Seth Tobocman taught art to small children in a village just outside of Ramallah, Palestine. Upon returning to America he was faced with the difficult prospect of explaining to his parents, life-long Zionists, just what he was doing in Palestine. To help initiate the conversation he collected twenty pages from his sketchbook of the trip and sent it to them. The drawings created a starting point from which they could talk about their differing political and religious beliefs concerning the Middle East.
Portraits of Israelis and Palestinians, a collection of charcoal drawings with simple captions such as “This is a modern man”, “These are Palestinians”, “These are Israelis” strips away the historical, religious and political complications surrounding the situation in the Middle East. He takes no sides, simply depicting the faces, clothes, and postures of the inhabitants of this contested land.
In sharing these private drawings, he allows us all to participate in the dialogue he had with his parents. How can we stop killing each other? How can we learn to recognize each other’s humanity?

“One of the most important political artists working today, Seth has always been ready to place himself on the front-line of the battle for human rights. This gives his art the power it radiates, that unbelievably rare thing in this world, truth.”

— Peter Kuper

Seth Tobocman began drawing comics and political cartoons as a teenager in the 1970’s. In 1979, Tobocman (along with Peter Kuper) started the radical and renowned comic book World War Three Illustrated as a protest to the Carter/Reagan arms build-up.

Tobocman has published two books, You Don’t Have to Fuck People Over to Survive and War in the Neighborhood. His work has appeared in the film The Crow and been used as cover art for recording artists on Polygram and Warner Brothers Records. His work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Nation and The Village Voice. Much of his artwork has been used for murals and posters of social movements and in demonstrations across the world

[call for submissions:zine] DEALING WITH SUICIDE

From Amanda:

hello. as some of you might know, an old friend of mine committed suicide almost one month ago. its been a shock and an incredibly hard time, but i am convinced that something positive has to come out of it.

i'm going to put together a zine. its going to have my writing about stacy, and its going to have facts and hotlines and advice. hopefully, its also going to have writing from YOU.

what i want is this:
write to/for me about experiences you have had with suicide. write about how you've dealt with it, about how you've dealt with or felt for someone who has had to deal with it. write about a time or times when you have felt suicidal and what stopped you from carrying it through, or write about aftermath of your own suicide attempt if you can/will.

it does not matter whether it has already been printed in a zine, or on your website/journal. entries can be anonymous if you wish.

i want this to be honest, and i want this to be raw. i want people to realise that this is big, that this is a problem, that by talking to each other maybe we can stop someone else from being lost.

please contact me about submitting or if you have questions - amanda at vortex.net.nz.

its been almost a month, and she's still in my thoughts every day. i miss her.

xo, amanda

[comix] MODERN TALES' LONGPLAY NOW UPDATED WEEKLY

Modern Tales, the leading provider of subscription-based webcomics, is proud to announce that its subscriber-only anthology series Longplay is changing from a monthly to a weekly schedule.

"It just makes sense," says Longplay editor Joe Zabel. "I mean, you serve a banquet one course at a time – you don't put the plates on the table all at once. We've been serving a banquet of comics every month, but it's gotten to be too much for people, and so some of our best comics get neglected."

Modern Tales Longplay is devoted to 'longform' webcomics – as opposed to serialized stories and comic strips. Longplay comics are completed works of sequential art, posted in their entirety all at once, more like graphic novels than like the typical four or six panel daily webcomic.

The April edition of Longplay will be dedicated to 'The BIF! POW! Tradition,' focusing on action/adventure comics with especially violent
themes.

This week's featured comic, 'Strikeforce: Bigfoot,' is an absorbing full-color tour-de-force by artist Dick Troutman. Eschewing dialog,
Troutman relates the entire story through visuals alone. Fear, anger, and inebriation are portrayed through pictures alone as a group of hunters have a nightmarish encounter with a legendary forest creature who's far more dangerous than they'd expected.

Other features coming on Longplay this month include comics by Mike Hawthorne and the team of Daniel Merlin Goodbrey and John Barber; graphic novels by L. F. Weber and Miguel Estrugo; and a two-part essay on classic comics by Gene Phillips.

Shortly after the announcement was made, Creature Feature Comics publisher Chad Welch and his wife and CFC editor Shelley Welch made a special guest appearance on Fox News "Tech Net Live" talk radio how. The two spoke at length about online comics and the internet's potential as a storytelling medium in the wake of the ever growing popularity of subscriber-based webcomic sites. Audio of the radio show will be made available on the Creature Feature Comics website.

An expanded list of contributors/comics to Creature Feature Comics is forthcoming. No official launch date has been set for Creature Feature Comics.

Born in Israel, the brothers have pursued separate careers, Tomer as an illustrator in New York for everything from The New Yorker to Entertainment Weekly, Assaf doing graphic novels for the French market. Both are incredibly talented, and the result is hauntingly powerful. Tomer and Assaf Hanuka are also identical twins. They share a similar genetic structure but were raised in different places. This condition creates a special tension between their stories and styles and is the foundation of Bipolar. Assaf, with writer Etgar Keret is telling the story of “Pizzeria Kamikaze” about a guy with a broken heart who committed suicide only to find himself at Pizza Kamikaze, a regular day job in a world where everyone died before and now it's about passing time. Tomer is telling personal stories with a twisted time sense that will put you right now, a year ago, and in the future.

“Ever felt like there was someone else in your house, even when you knew there wasn't?” said Tomer Hanuka when asked to describe his Eisner Award nominated short story "Telekinetic" from Bipolar #3, "A chronic stomachache and a picture that won't stay still pushes our hero to confront this someone and discover the legend of Shmilove, the world's first Telekinetic.”

After three years of mandatory Army service in Israel, Tomer Hanuka moved to New York. He works as a freelance illustrator for publications such as the New Yorker, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and TIME. He was awarded the Gold and Silver medals from the Society of Illustrators. In addition to his comics work with Alternative Comics, Tomer Hanuka regularly paints lush covers for DC Comics and contributes remarkable short stories for comic book anthologies. He lives in Brooklyn.

Titles from small press, alternative, and non-direct market publishers had their strongest showing ever in this year’s Eisner Awards nominations. The judges for the 2003 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards chose works from over 40 different publishers for the 26 categories.

The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards are considered the "Oscars" of the comic book industry. They are handed out each year in a gala ceremony at Comic-Con International: San Diego, the largest and oldest comics convention in the United States, drawing over 63,000 people last year. Ballots will be going out in early May to some 4,000 comics publishers, creators, and retailers. The results will be announced in a gala awards ceremony at Comic-Con: International: San Diego on the night of Friday, July 18 at the San Diego Convention Center’s new ballroom.

The Eisner Awards are named for renowned cartoonist Will Eisner (creator of "The Spirit" and several award-winning graphic novels), who always attends the ceremony to personally hand the trophies to the winners. The Awards are given out in more than two dozen categories covering the best publications and creators of the previous year (such as Best Short Story, Best Graphic Album, Best Writer, and so on). The finalists on the ballot are selected by a blue-ribbon committee that considers thousands of entries submitted by publishers and creators. The nominees are then voted on by all parts of the comic book industry: writers, artists, and other creators; publishers; editors; and retailers and distributors.

The Eisner Awards, established in 1987, came under the auspices of the San Diego Comic Convention, Inc., a nonprofit corporation, in 1990. The Awards Administrator is Jackie Estrada. The awards program has been funded by contributions from distributors, retailers, media companies, and such industry suppliers as major printers of comics.

"The primary purpose of these awards," says Estrada, "is to call attention to and celebrate the best that the comics art form has to offer. A glance at any of the ballots from the last several years reveals a wide range of projects, subject matters, and levels, from such serious works as art spiegelman’s Maus and Joe Sacco’s Safe Area Gorazde to such lighter fare as Jeff Smith’s Bone and Sergio Aragonés’s Groo. The point is that reading comics can be a rewarding experience for people with a variety of tastes and of any age."

[comix] BORDERLINE: "YOU STILL LOVE US!"

From Danny Black:

After 4 months of the pay-per-view experiment and 4 months of
the majority of you tight-fisted freeloaders ignoring us - BORDERLINE is
free again and proving to be the most popular thing of its kind!

The management - Borderline Media Ltd - decided after nearly two
years and a peak of 130,000+ downloads during our first year that it was
time to cut back on the bandwidth, reduce the size of the storage capacity,
make the operational costs of Borderline smaller by cutting costs.

So for 3 days there has been a http 509 error! A what?

That means "Bandwidth Limit Exceeded - The server is temporarily
unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her
bandwidth limit. Please try again later."

Bummer! Especially when we're free again and wanting all of you
lovely people to download Britain's only real Quality comics magazine.
There have been literally tens of thousands of you who have downloaded #20
and by the looks of the amount of emails we're getting thousands more who
can't find it.

Well, thanks to those wonderful people at Silverbullets hosting
services, we're up and running again.

But be warned all you Dial-up and those in receipt of crappy
ISPs - #20 is a BIG one! 80-PDFed-Pages of comics goodness and ONLY
available in one size (mainly because we exceeded the PDF limit as well as
the bandwidth limit)and that weighs in at 10megabytes!

AND...

Is #20 really the last issue of BORDERLINE?

Nah... wait for a special announcement near a computer screen
near you on MAY 1st 2003.

The future isn't just bright - the future is BORDERLINE!

[comix] THE CASTAWAYS HEAD TO SPAIN

From Rob Vollmar:

A Spanish language edition of THE CASTAWAYS, a 2003 Eisner nominee for Best Single Issue/One Shot, is being released by Dude Comics at the Salón del Cómic in Barcelona which runs from May 8 until the 11th. Dude, a respected publisher with a track record for bringing a number of successful American comics including BONE and STRANGERS IN PARADISE to receptive Spanish audiences, is introducing THE CASTAWAYS as part of a new trade paperback line.

THE CASTAWAYS artist, Pablo G. Callejo remarked on the news, saying, “Everyone wants to be appreciated in his home, so this is really exciting to me. Even more, the last few years have been a great time for the indy comics here in Spain, with some new publishers and high quality authors.” The new edition of THE CASTAWAYS will feature eight, never-before seen pages of story and an introduction by noted comics scholar, Dr. Ana Merino.

Absence of Ink, the domestic publisher of THE CASTAWAYS, is participating in this venture by making Spanish language editions of the book available to American audiences. AoI Publisher, S. Edward Irvin notes that, “No one has really made an effort to reach out to the Spanish comics audience in the United States, despite its potential as the fastest growing language base domestically. We’re hoping to place this edition in stores with high-concentrations of Spanish-speaking clientele, as well as exploring avenues with Spanish language teachers all across the country.”

To help generate interest, Absence of Ink is making an English translation of the additional eight pages of story produced exclusively for this edition available for free on their website at http://www.onypsus.com/absenceofink/castaway/castaway00.htm. The Spanish edition of the CASTAWAYS is 64 pages long, reproduced with a lush, blue tone that best represents the artist’s process in creating it, and will cost around 8 Euros. Interested parties not currently in possession of Euros should contact ed@absenceofink.com for further information until the new edition is posted on the website.

Yellow Baby

[comix] JED ALEXANDER'S YELLOW BABY COMING THIS SUMMER FROM ALTERNATIVE

Gainesville, Florida, April 17, 2003: Alternative Comics has announced that it will release the debut issue of Jed Alexander’s Yellow Baby solo-anthology series this July 2003. Drawn in his appealing “clear line” style, each issue of this thrice-annual ongoing series features the serialized “Turtle, turtle” story of an island off the coast of Mexico believed to be a giant living turtle by its inhabitants. “Turtle, turtle” is told from the point of view of Cesar, who, born and raised in the U.S of mixed parents, spends one long summer in Mexico with his grandmother, then returns, later, as an adult. Not exactly a coming of age story, “Turtle, turtle” explores ideas of racial, social, and global identity. Yellow Baby also features stories that are contrastingly very funny, very sad, and very odd, all rendered in a range of methods and styles, while still remaining unmistakably “Jed”.
By Jed Alexander, Two Colors, Mature Readers, 32 pages, 8” x 8”, $3.95; ISBN 1-891867-54-7.

Jed Alexander lives in Davis California with his girlfriend Regina and her two dogs. He’s written and done illustration for Shannon Wheeler’s Too Much Coffee Man Magazine, and has done covers for the free newspapers The Sacramento News and Review and Outword. His first published comics work, an earlier, more primitive version of “Turtle, turtle”, appeared in issue #5 of the anthology Meathaus, which, coincidentally, is the same anthology that premiered the works of Alternative Comics artists Tomer Hanuka and Thomas Herpich.

[comix] POP GUN WAR TO BE COLLECTED BY DARK HORSE

Caught in the grip of the city: Farel Dalrymple’s acclaimed
Pop Gun War collected by Dark Horse

A fallen angel, a boy with wings, a dwarf and his giant pet fish, a disembodied head in a valise – these are the denizens of Farel Dalrymple’s alien, yet distressingly familiar cityscape. Sinclair, the boy with wings, floats in and out of this gritty urban scene providing a viewpoint that reveals the city at its harshest and at its most hopeful.

This June, Dark Horse collects the first five issues of Farel Darymple’s acclaimed Pop Gun War in a handsome 136 page trade. Daring and beautiful, Pop Gun War is both a meditation on alienation and a love letter to the sometimes cruel city that Dalrymple calls home. Rich, textured, and unique, Pop Gun War is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

For its creator, Farel Dalrymple, Pop Gun War has been a labor of love. “Since starting this series almost three years ago, working on Pop Gun War has been a desperate but fun trip,” he says. “These are the first five chapters in what I hope to be a provocative and exciting continuing tale. It's very exciting to me that Dark Horse Comics is publishing this collection and giving me the opportunity to share it with a new audience.”

Walt Simonson calls Farel Dalrymple “one of the finest young draftsmen to quietly sidle into comics in a long time. And one of the field’s most gifted storytellers.” Farel Dalrymple is a Society of Illustrators Gold medal winner, a Xeric Grant recipient, and a Russ Manning Award nominee.

Pop Gun War is available June 25 for the retail price of $13.95.

[zine] ALMOST EVERYONE I LOVE LIVES IN NEW JERSEY

From Andrea:

almost everyone i love lives in new jersey is my first zine since
putting love fades, my former zine, to rest after 2 years and 7
issues. It's a collection of seven short stories. from the
intro: "one thing that a lot of people told me is that they liked the
way that I described people I know, so I decided to write a whole
slew of stories about people...some of these are half truths, some
are completely false and some are a little of both..." this is the
longest zine i've ever done and also the most consciously themed, and
i'm pretty proud of the way it turned out.

the stats: the zine is 32 pages half size, most of which are
completely text except for some illustrations from my dad's 1976 high
school yearbook. in keeping with the yearbook-y theme, the covers are
made out of contact sheets i found in the dumpster of my college's
yearbook office. you can get it for $2ppd, $1 and some stamps, and I
like trades too as long as you email me first. wholesale rates for
distros and stores are $1

send cash to andrea, po box 56106 phila pa 19130, paypal money to

ZINE WRITER CULLEN CARTER HOSPITALIZED AFTER BIKE ACCIDENT

From Allyson Carter at ccarter@ticon.net

"Last Tuesday night (April 1st), on his way home (biking) from class,
Cullen was hit by a pickup truck who apparently never saw him, even
though he had lights on his bike. It was right at dusk. Cullen hit
the windshield, then hit the roof, denting it, and then landed in the
bed of the truck. The man did stop, and the police have done a full
investigation. The DA decided not to press charges, but that's
another story.

Right now, Cullen is in a deep coma. He suffered a brain injury
(called Diffuse Axonal Injury), which is similar to what happens to
boxers when they get a hard right hook and are knocked unconscious
(it is also similar to shaken baby syndrome); although to a much
greater degree.

He was wearing a helmet, which probably saved his life. He also
suffered a broken left hip, broken bones in his face, bruised lungs,
cracked ribs, vertebrae fractures (which do not affect his spinal
cord) and some facial lacerations which were probably caused by the
windshield. He is not breathing on his own; they inserted a
breathing tube at the scene to stabilize him (which is standard
procedure). He is stable; he is not in immediate danger of dying at
any moment.

Right now his main issue is the brain injury. He is in the ICU at
Froedtert Hospital here in Milwaukee (where they have been wonderful
to me and the rest of the family) and they are doing everything they
can, but it's basically a "wait and see" kind of deal. With brain
injuries they really can't judge how or if someone will recover from
them. Some do, and some don't. It sometimes can take a very long
time to know exactly what kind of brain damage you're dealing with.
He does show a few encouraging signs, though. He can hear voices in
the room, because his brain activity changes when someone talks to
him. He can feel pain, (although I don't think he is in constant
pain from his injuries) and reacts to light. They are checking his
neurological signs every hour. The nurses told me that it's really
too early to expect improvement, but he is holding his own, and not
getting worse, which is good. He does now have a touch of pneumonia,
which they are treating with antibiotics.

Tomorrow he is scheduled to have surgery to have a trach tube
inserted into his throat so he can breathe through that. Once the
trach is in, they would wean him off the ventilator. They think his
lungs will be able to breathe on their own, but because of the coma
he needs the trach to do so. He really does have great doctors who
are very experienced in this sort of thing helping him, and I know
they are doing their best and what is in Cullen's best interest now.

I am hanging in there and trying to remain "thinking positive", which
is easier at some times than others, but all our families are here to
support me and they're all helping me with Veronica, our 2 1/2 yo
daughter. She doesn't really understand, and she's just happy that
all her Nanas and Grammies and Papas are here and they all take her
out to get ice cream for lunch. She hasn't seen him, and probably
won't; at least not until the breathing tube is out.

They are saying that he could remain in the coma for a long time;
maybe never recovering. We won't know what kind of long term
prognosis we have until 9 to 12 months have gone by.

Cullen's brother and I also are setting up an email list so everyone
who wants can stay updated on his condition. If you hear from anyone
who would want to be on that list, have them email me at this
address [above]. We plan to update it every Wednesday, whether there's news
to report or not. That way, no one wonders what's going on with
him. It's been impossible for me to keep up with all the friends and
family who call and write to express their concern and support, and I
imagine this will become even more of a problem as more people find
out.

Please send out good thoughts (or prayers, as the case may be) for
Cullen.

Thank you so much. Allyson"

Paul Gravett chairs a debate on autobiographical comics. Some British and French cartoonists push back the boundaries of the superhero comic genre. They draw their everyday life and daily routine with humour.

With Jean-Christophe Menu, co-founder of L'Association Publishing and author of 'Livre de Phamille' about his marriage and family
life; Fabrice Neaud, Alph'Art award-winning author of 'Journal' recording his life as a young gay man, and Glenn Dakin, author of the witty stories of his alter ego Abe, collected in 'Abe: Wrong for All the Right Reasons'.

[zine:personal] MR. PEEBODY'S SOILED TROUSERS #17 OUT NOW

From Jay Peebody:

The new issue of my zine, Mr.Peebody's Soiled Trousers and Other
Delights
#17 is out now. It includes my diary entries from October
and November (yes, it's a double issue!) of 2001 (yes, I'm really
behind!). Here are the basics: I live in Hollywood, work in the CNN
building, and make sweet lovin' to Cherry of Idiosyncrasy zine.
That's about it. If you haven't received a copy from me yet, you're
probably not getting one. I didn't print many, cuz I'm freakin' poor
as hell right now. I'd like to give out freebies, but I just can't.
So if you'd like one, send $2 to Jay, POB 931333, Los Angeles CA

[zines/comix] NEW PRINTING CO-OP OFFERS CHEAPER PRINTING AND EXPOSURE

From Daniel Way/Bad Press:

My name's Daniel Way and I'm a writer for Marvel Comics. Hopefully, you've heard of me. My wife, Tiffany, and I came up with this idea. It's gonna work.

Anyway...on with the show:

You love minicomics and zines, right? We love minicomics and zines! You want to publish your stuff and get it out there, right? Well, we want you to get it out there, too! You're broke, right?

We're not gonna give you any money!

What we will give you, however, is the opportunity to get your publication printed at substantially less than what you'd pay virtually anywhere else. Why? Because we love you.

No...really.

Bad Press doesn't make money. It's a co-op...it's not supposed to. But that's not the point. The point is, we love independently-published comics and zines and we recognize the fact that it costs a lot of people a lot of money to produce them. A big reason why a lot of minis and zines go under is because they're often sold for what it costs to produce them--if not less (especially when you factor in the time and effort producing the work, itself). Enter Bad Press, a printing co-op made up of indy publishers. By ganging up the print runs, the unit cost is lowered to...well, to almost nothing if you publish frequently enough.

More details at the site: http://www.badpressprinting.com/

[indymedia] PORTLAND ZINE SYMPOSIUM - Aug. 1-3, 2003

From Microcosm Publishing:

This summer, independent publishers from across the country will gather for
the third annual Portland Zine Symposium. The symposium is a three-day
conference and social celebrating independent publishing. It will be held
at the Portland State University campus on the weekend of August 1-3, 2003.

The Portland Zine Symposium is put together by a group of local organizers,
activists, artists, and zinesters who seek to create community between
different producers of independent media and art. Another focus is to help
people share skills and information related to zine culture. The Portland
Zine Symposium is a place for people to network, explore ideas, build
skills and of course, trade zines. Through hands-on workshops and
discussions, the conference will examine the role and effect of all types
of zines on both underground and mainstream culture.

The focus of this year's symposium is It Takes All Kinds. Workshops and
panels are plentiful during the weekend to support this theme of diversity.
During the three days you could take a class on Zines and Motherhood, The
History of Zines, Bookbinding or How to Distribute your Zine (and others).
In between the classes zine enthusiasts will have ample time to peruse
other people's wares and socialize. Last year the symposium attracted about
1,000 local and national participants.

If you have a website, we'd like you to consider putting up our banner. We
feel that cross promoting the event is the best way to generate a diverse
audience.

Thanks and Take care.
Joe Biel
Promotion Sympanista.

[comix] YOUR DICK'S TOO SHORT TO F**K WITH GOD

From Ben T. Steckler:

I've made a new mini-comic in Chick-Parody Format.

It's called "Your Dick's Too Short to F**K with God", and I sold quite a few of them over the last couple weeks in Boston and Columbus.

I'll gladly send a copy to anybody over the age of 16 who sends $1 and a stamp to me at:
Ben T. Steckler
POB 7273
York, PA 17404

Folks in the Boston/Cambridge area can get a copy at Million Year Picnic, if they haven't sold all theirs yet. I wouldn't dawdle. they gave it a full facing, and the title is an eyecatcher.

And if you have your own Jack Chick Parody, I'll gladly trade.

P.S. I still have copies of "Get BenT!" #10 left, too, for $4.75 ppd. for a review of that, go here: http://members.tripod.com/almostnormalcomics/id173.htm

[zines] HUMOROUS POETRY, VEGAN ZINES AND MORE

From Stephanie Scarborough:

I've got a lot of junk to plug, so I'm gonna do it all at once so I won?t have to bug anyone any more than I have to:

First, I have two poetry chapbook/zine things finished and ready for your perusal.

Your Kisses Are Like Metallic Squirrel Droppings is a collection of 34 screwed-up/humorous/masochistic love poems such as: You Should Have Told Me You Were Dead, Female in Question Finds Relationship Consuming, A Rotting Corpse, Clean Masochism Sonnet, Forever I?ll Love You (Perhaps), and more. Here?s a sample poem to give you an idea of the tone/style:

Female in Question Finds Her Relationship Consuming

I tried to be sensitive,
I tried to understand,
But now dear I must ask you
To stop chewing on my hand.

I didn't think your nibbling
On my ear would do much harm
Until it turned up missing
With my leg and foot and arm.

I thought you were just friendly,
But discovered otherwise
When it wasn't Richard Simmon
Who was trimming down my thighs.

I love you dearly, darling,
But I fear this just won't work--
No, it's not your criminal record, love,
It's just this chewing quirk.

So kiss me one last time dear,
But no too long, I said,
For I want to end this love of ours
While I am still a head.

(end poem)

Oh, hahahahaha! Ugh! Your Kisses Are Like Metallic Squirrel Droppings is $2 + stamp ($4 international). It?s quater-size, hand-bound, 40 pages, not counting cover. No illustrations, but the cover is really cool and looks like an old-school tabloid. Address for all orders is at the at end of this post.

My other poetry zine is Meditations on Spam. 18 poems about Hormel's miracle meat in a can, ranging from stupid and goofy to somewhat serious. This is a cut-and-paste, purposely-kind-of-cheap-looking collection with illustrations by me along with some generic black-and-white pictures of Spam tins. Poems include: Barbie Longs to Be Like Spam, Magnus to the Mermaid, My Pet Spam, and White Trash Gormet. 12 pages, not counting cover. $1 + stamp ($2 international). Here's a Spam poem sample for you:

Ken Finds a New Love, Even Pinker and More Manufactured Than Barbie

When Ken awoke and wiped the Cheez Whiz off
His slimy, plastic body, thinking what
He'd say to Barbie when she heard that he
Had found a lover far more pink than her.
He took a swig of Tang and had a slice
Of virgin-snow-white Wonder bread. And far
More manufactured than she?d ever be.
He slipped on back beneath the sheets, caressed
The pink and lovely mass of flesh beside
Himself. So cold, but fleshy, nonetheless,
Much more than plastic Barbie. When he turned
The key last night and slipped the golden dress
Off from his lovely, fleshy Spam he could
Not stop himself and, thoughtless, plunged right in.

The Cheap Vegan #8 is out as well. This one contains random things to do to save money, price comparisons of various vegan breakfasts, recommended reading for cheap vegans (books, zines, magazines), the wondrous wonders of cornmeal, why be a cheap vegan?, polenta recipe, and a few other tidbits. Issues #1-7 are also still available. All are $1 each ($2 international).

I've already posted about The Rabbit Fodder Addict, but it?s still available for your cooking pleasure for $1 ($2 international).

I've also finally got a website up for The Cheap Vegan at: http://cheapvegan.cjb.net

And The Pleasant Unicorn Store where you can see and order zines and other stuff I make is up as well at: http://diystore.cjb.net

The prices at the PU store may be slightly different from the ones here. Pick the one that's cheaper. Shipping is included in the prices at the website is the main difference.

Lastly, if anyone knows of anyone who makes or sells vegan zines and/or cookzines or any food-related zine, please let me know. My e-mail is: nurdsteph@yahoo.com

Send all orders, money and love to:
Stephanie Scarborough
P. O. Box 715
Weatherford, TX 76086
USA

Thank you kindly for your time. May all your Tang be orange.
