HEAD TO SPAIN

A Spanish language edition of THE CASTAWAYS, a 2003 Eisner nominee for Best Single Issue/One Shot, is being released by Dude Comics at the Salón del Cómic in Barcelona which runs from May 8 until the 11th. Dude, a respected publisher with a track record for bringing a number of successful American comics including BONE and STRANGERS IN PARADISE to receptive Spanish audiences, is introducing THE CASTAWAYS as part of a new trade paperback line.
THE CASTAWAYS artist, Pablo G. Callejo remarked on the news, saying, “Everyone wants to be appreciated in his home, so this is really exciting to me. Even more, the last few years have been a great time for the indy comics here in Spain, with some new publishers and high quality authors.” The new edition of THE CASTAWAYS will feature eight, never-before seen pages of story and an introduction by noted comics scholar, Dr. Ana Merino.
Absence of Ink, the domestic publisher of THE CASTAWAYS, is participating in this venture by making Spanish language editions of the book available to American audiences. AoI Publisher, S. Edward Irvin notes that, “No one has really made an effort to reach out to the Spanish comics audience in the United States, despite its potential as the fastest growing language base domestically. We’re hoping to place this edition in stores with high-concentrations of Spanish-speaking clientele, as well as exploring avenues with Spanish language teachers all across the country.”
To help generate interest, Absence of Ink is making an English translation of the additional eight pages of story produced exclusively for this edition available for free on their website at

The Spanish edition of the CASTAWAYS is 64 pages long, reproduced with a lush, blue tone that best represents the artist’s process in creating it, and will cost around 8 Euros.
