[comix:event] WIMP ATTACK: RYAN, HENDERSON, WEISSMAN IN L.A.
NEWS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Los Angeles, California, April 26, 2003: The Gallery wing of the world-renowned Meltdown in Los Angeles will hold Meltdown’s latest art show, Wimp Attack!, featuring comic art luminaries on display from May 9 through June 1. The group show is aptly named Wimp Attack! and is a three-pronged battle of the brush queens – those queens being Johnny Ryan, Sam Henderson, and Steven Weissman. The show opening and artists’ reception will take place on Friday May 9 at 7pm at Meltdown, 7522 Sunset Boulevard between Fairfax and La Brea.
Son of Senator and Mrs. Bruce Weissman, Steven ("Ribs" to his friends) Weissman gave up a career in politics to devote time to his love of cartooning. In addition to regular appearances in Nickelodeon Magazine, his comics have been published in three Fantagraphics collections. CHAMPS, DON'T CALL ME STUPID, and WHITE FLOWER DAY are used by the military to teach soldiers how to tell humans from animals. His work has been lauded by three and a half presidents and earned him the coveted Silver Ladderback Prize from the Cucumber Foundation in 1998. He lives in Hollywood with his wife Charissa and quadruplets.
Johnson "Johnny" Ryan and his lovely fiancée (and celebrated artists' muse), Jenny Nixon, live off of Tony Millionaire's hand-me-downs in the fashionable Silverlake district of Los Angeles. When they're not shopping at Barney's or attending splashy premieres, Johnny phones in the occasional comic, while Ms. Nixon studies travel brochures and hosts craft nights for all the local comics widows, leaving the cartoonists all lonely and pathetic... just like they were before they were thirty. They have two gay cats and a gay refrigerator. Do titles like BLECKY YUCKERELLA and ANGRY YOUTH COMICS ring a bell, chump? Well, do they?
Sam Henderson is the legendary genius behind THE MAGIC WHISTLE comic book and Marlon Brando's weight gain. Sam almost started drawing comics in 1982, but it wasn't until 2001 that he finally took that big step and drew his first comic. When not sleeping with other comic book artist's wives, he's drawing hilarious comics and accepting all the credit for the success of the SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS cartoon program. He also had a Pulitzer Prize, but Art Spiegelman broke into his house one night and stole it. He thought the first bio we wrote for him was too crude. Well, la-dee-freakin'-da, Mr. Sensitive Funnyman!
Both Sam Henderson and Johnny Ryan were nominated on April 21 for the prestigious category of “Special Award for Humor” for The Harvey Awards for 2003 – Sam Henderson was nominated for the fifth consecutive year for his THE MAGIC WHISTLE comic book series from Alternative Comics – Johnny Ryan was nominated for the second consecutive year for his ANGRY YOUTH COMICS from Fantagraphics Books. The Harvey Awards are one of the comics industry’s oldest and most respected awards. The Harvey Awards recognize outstanding achievements in 24 categories, and are the only industry awards both nominated by and selected by the full body of comics professionals.
