NEW SOCK MONKEY COLLECTION FROM DARK HORSE IN MAY
Tony Millionaire’s Sock Monkey returns in May hardcover
This May, Dark Horse presents the newest adventures of Tony Millionaire’s Sock Monkey in a lovingly designed hardcover edition. The Uncle Gabby hardcover is a 40-page meditation on memory and childhood, rendered in Millionaire’s uniquely beautiful style and colored by Jim Campbell. Uncle Gabby is joined by his companions Mr. Crow and Inches the Doll on his latest melancholy adventure.
The story begins as the Sock Monkey returns home from the Poetical Society where he has become a Master Poet dedicated to the Science of Un-naming Objects. He embarks on a journey of sentimentality as he rediscovers his childhood home. However, things are not as he remembers them, and he is subjected to an avalanche of heartbreaking realizations.
Asked to describe the book, Tony Millionaire outlined its themes. “Have you ever walked into an old house and thought that you had been there before, or seen a sailing ship on the ocean and felt that you must have been a pirate in a previous life? This is a book about nostalgia, the way we remember things, and about longing for what we never had.”
Tony Millionaire’s Sock Monkey: Uncle Gabby hardcover is available May 19, for the retail price of $14.95.

Modern Masters Volume Three - Bruce Timm
You don’t have to be a fan of comics to know the name Bruce Timm, the subject of Modern Masters Volume 3. As a producer, director and designer of the Emmy Award-winning Batman: The Animated Series, as well as The Superman Adventures, Batman Beyond, and currently Justice League, Timm is making an enormous impact in the field of animation, creating work that both kids and adults can equally enjoy. It also showcases page after page of rare and unseen artwork, including a gallery of his best commissioned work, as well as behind-the-scenes animation concepts! TRINA ROBBINS, OTHERS READ IN SAN FRANCISCO, FEBRUARY 23
Lit at The Canvas
A celebration of San Francisco literature
Monday, February 23rd at 7:00PM
The Canvas Cafe (9th Avenue & Lincoln), SF
Free - but we will pass the hat- so if you like want you hear, and you would like to kick out some cash to the writer. We will give you a hat to put it in.
This is a series of theme literary events in the Sunset district of San Francisco. The idea is simple – a reading series with a twist; something that you may not see at a normal reading.
This month, we talk a look at Sex, Death, Life, and the Government. Four totally separate things or things that are easily intertwined; during this month we will find out.
Featured writers:
Retired cartoonist Trina Robbins turned her talents to feminist pop culture over ten years ago when she wrote her first book on women cartoonists, the now out of print A Century of Women Cartoonists. Since then, she's written ten more books including a book about dark goddesses ( Eternally Bad) and her latest is Tender Murderers: Women Who Kill. Aside from writing about women who kill, she still likes to write
about killer women cartoonists. Check out Trina's website at www.trinarobbins.com.
Sherilyn Connelly is a San Francisco-based writer and performer who moved to The City in 1994 so she wouldn't have to be Fresno-based anymore. She's featured at Adobe Books, The Berkeley Summer Poetry Series, The Camp Trans
2003 Benefit, fundraisers for Tom Ammiano and Matt Gonzalez (but not Angela Alioto, oddly enough), Perverts Put Out!, Spanganga's Chick Nite, and the infamous Back from the Dead show with Danielle Willis. (Sherilyn was the
skinny goth chick without fangs.) She co-hosts the monthly variant kabaret Wicked Messenger, and acted in Spanganga's stage productions of Night of the Living Dead and The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Her chapbooks Substance and Sublimation are available at Dog-Eared Books and Modern Times, both located at 20th and Valencia for your shopping convenience. And, as if that weren't enough – and, really, don't you think it ought to be – she also co-produces the cult public access show kittypr0n, which you should watch.
Harmon Leon has written features for Details, Maxim, Salon, Cosmopolitan, The Wave and NPR's This American Life, as well as many other national and international publications. The Harmon Chronicles is a collection of essays written in Leon's unique, "infiltrative" style. In naming The Harmon Chronicles Best Humor Book for
January/February 2003, Book Sense said, "Leon makes David Sedaris look like
George Will." Leon's one-man show, "Harmon Leon Goes to Hell" received rave reviews at comedy festivals around the world. He lives in San Francisco and is
currently touring the U.S. in support of The Harmon Chronicles.
The mad geniuses behind it all:
Kevin Smokler (Emcee) is a book critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, a contributor to NPR and a resident of the San Francisco Writer's Grotto. His weekly newsletter of book recommendations, The Smoke Signal, goes out to bibliophiles all over the world.
Melinda Adams (producer) - is a confused DIY renaissance woman, has been an
event planner, stage tech, writer, filmmaker, and actress. She is a resident
of the Sunset and just sick of having to get on a bus to see a great show.

ALTERNATIVE COMICS IN JUNE
A Fine Mess #2
Matt Madden returns with exciting and challenging new short stories that invite the reader to explore new vistas of comics structure and storytelling. "Prisoner of Zembla" tells the tale of Alina Zek, an exiled philologist who makes a doomed last stand to save the written alphabet of her native language. The concern with the alphabet leaks beyond the story and into the very structure of the comic: the careful reader will find a hidden layer to the story, the "prison" which holds Professor Zek captive. "The Envoy" is the tale of four hardy seamen who accompany an eminent scientist and his young daughter on a perilous mission to uncharted Arctic waters. "La Mulata de Córdoba" is a retelling of a legend from colonial Mexico about a witch who conjures magic from a source we are all close to: the drawn line. Rounding off the issue will be another installment of Madden's acclaimed "Exercises in Style."
By Matt Madden, Mature Readers, B&W, full color cover, oversized 7-3/4" x 9-1/4", 32 pages, $3.50 US. ISBN: 1-891867-75-X
Gongwanadon
Thomas Herpich's sophomore book features grieving aliens, familiar pilgrims, dimwitted doppelgangers, platonic friends, and more, in quiet optimistic tales of imprisonment, spiritual possession, and torture. Herpich confronts as many vague paradoxes as he can get his hands on in this informal study of personal responsibility and its consequences.
Weaving layers of subtlety and symbol around simple, raw, emotional cores, these new works place emphasis on the expressive power of Herpich's drawings. Although the approaches and techniques used in each story are varied, this is a unified collection. These are stories about relationships. Herpich is fascinated with the deforming consequences of evaded responsibility and lax discipline that seem inherent in human interaction. The centerpieces of the book, "Gongwanadon 1" and "Gongwanadon 2", come from a series of experiments by the author, focusing on spontaneity, risk, and intuition. The results are consistently inventive, morally aggressive, and, above all, graphically stunning.
By Thomas Herpich, Mature Readers, $4.95 US, 48 pages, deluxe oversized 8½” x 11”, saddle stitched, B&W, ISBN: 1-891867-70-9
Hickee v2 #2
This anthology consists of really funny stories by tremendously talented cartoonists. Each strip flows beautifully from panel to panel, demonstrating an amazing aptitude for expression and nuance. The animation backgrounds of the contributing cartoonists really shine through in the impeccable pacing of the strips. What started out loosely as a group of friends hanging around in San Francisco coffee shops on Sunday afternoons, Hickee has become a major contributor to the underground comics scene. Initiated by Grickle creator Graham Annable, he knew that the humorous talents of this gang could find a larger audience through comics. Hickee is the vehicle that ties all their Sunday afternoon sessions together – stories that emerge from doodles or from musings about life – resulting in a raw comic book. No censoring, no test audience, and no laugh track. Made to entertain themselves, Hickee will undoubtedly draw you into their world and provide lots of laughs along the way.
By Graham Annable, Paul Brown, Vamberto Maduro, Joe White, David Bogan, Razmig Mavlian, Nathan Stapley, Scott Campbell, Derek Sakai, Marc Overney, For Mature Readers, $4.95, 48pg, deluxe, 8.5” x 7", B&W, ISBN: 1-891867-76-8.

This Saturday (February 21st) is the Isotope's epic APE AFTERMATH 2004 from 8pm until 5am. At 9pm we will be kicking off our Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini-Comics ceremony and handing out the gold to our lucky winner. Special guest and last year's award winner Rob Osborne (1000 Steps to World Domination) will be reflecting on his past year as an Isotope Award winner and also making a special announcement.
After 10:30pm APE AFTERMATH becomes a 21-and-over event and this year we will be featuring one of San Francisco's finest rare brews, The Double Daddy, from Speakeasy Brewery. Only 26 kegs of this fantastic beer have been made, and we couldn't be prouder to have secured one of these for your APE AFTERMATH drinking pleasure.
In the Isotope tradition, the bar is open and there is never a cover charge. Coat and tie not required.

ARSENIC LULLABY CREATOR ON THE RADIO, FEBRUARY 15
From Dan Merritt:
Douglas Paszkiewicz, creator of the dark humored comic Arsenic Lullaby, will be my guest on Graphic Music this Sunday 02-15-04 at 6pm on WHFR.FM.
" Arsenic Lullaby is the most disturbing, disgusting, deliciously offensive book I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Not for the easily offended, Paszkiewicz presents a myriad of short stories in such terribly bad taste, that are delivered with such a sense of comic timing, we can only be left with the idea that he's the Anti-Christ and we're happy to be along for the ride to Armageddon." says Eric Valentine of Mediasharx.com
Graphic Music is a 3-hour program focusing on music from movies, TV, cartoons, comics, video games, and whatever multimedia source that uses sound to complement vision.
Airing live every Sunday from 5-8pm, Graphic Music is broadcast from the WHFR.FM studios located on the grounds of Henry Ford Community College, in the real motor city, Dearborn, Michigan.
Listen at 6pm for occasional interviews with creators behind some of today's most innovative comic books.
Every Sunday at 6:30pm, I present a news segment focusing on events in the world of comic books and graphic novels. Listen in to find out more about an original American art form.

Less than Heroes
by David Yurkovich
In the city of Philadelphia there is a tall building at 18th and Market Street, atop of which lives four individuals. They are the official protectors of the city. Their job is to be around when traditional law enforcement fails. But are they really heroes? Meet Philadelphia's contracted super-hero team, Threshold. A quartet more interested in milk and cookies than crime and punishment. A team more concerned with battling indigestion than their arch enemies. Sure, they have super-powers. They can leap tall buildings, fly, and do all the stuff other heroes do. More than human? Probably. Less than heroes? Without a doubt.

"This collection of comics captures with grace and humor – and frequently profound insight – the joys, pressures, and contradictions of being gay in America." –Dan Savage, 'Savage Love' . Editors Robert Kirby and David Kelly celebrate Boy Trouble's 10th anniversary with some of today's best gay and lesbian cartoonists as they riff on the alternative boy aesthetic. Jennifer Camper's protagonist spends a whirlwind day with his juvenile delinquent dyke sister; Ivan Velez, Jr. chronicles the heartaches of the well-endowed; and Craig Bostick captures the bittersweet angst of teen rock'n'roll boys. Kelly and Leanne Franson explore alienating bar life; Kirby and underground legend G.B. Jones present an encounter with an artsy adolescent; and Andy Hartzell offers a whimsical and beautifully drawn 12-page fantasy. Also featured: Cavalcade of Boys creator Tim Fish, Anonymous Boy, C. Bard Cole, and Michael Fahy. Distributed by Top Shelf.

Happy Pack
by Josh Simmons

The Happy Pack contains all 4 issues of Josh Simmons' controversial mini-series, Happy for the low price of ten bucks.

The Cartoon Art Museum is proud to offer two companion exhibitions in celebration of the Seussentennial, the100th birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss.
Happy Hundredth, Dr. Seuss! - To think that it's happening on Mission Street! A host of fanciful creatures gather in celebration of their creator's 100th birthday at the Cartoon Art Museum. This exhibition stars 25 original works by Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991), production art from Dr. Seuss's animated specials, and vintage Seuss artifacts, on display from February 20 June 20. All demonstrate the enduring ingenuity and artistry of Dr. Seuss.
The Art of Dr. Seuss - This exhibition chronicles a side of Dr. Seuss that most readers have never seen. You'll discover Seussian imagery from every facet of his varied career, including rare early works and poetry, advertising works, WWII editorial cartoons, magazine covers from the 1920s and 1930s, his collection of unorthodox taxidermy, the Secret Art, and never-before-seen works from Seuss's personal archives. This special touring exhibition will only be on display for a limited period of time, from March 5 to April 10. In addition to providing an overview of Dr. Seuss's life and art, it will include hand-pulled serigraphs from the Secret Art collection, special limited edition prints of his children's book illustrations and examples of his unique sculptures. This exhibition was produced and organized by the Chase Group with the help of the Dennis Rae Fine Art in San Francisco and Peabody Fine Art in Menlo Park.

ODDGOD COLLECTS TOM MANNING'S RUNOFF
Oddgod Press is pleased to announce the trade paperback collection for Tom Manning's cult hit Runoff: Chapter One, reaching stores this April. Written and illustrated by Manning, Runoff chronicles the odd occurrences in the small town of Range, Washington. Equal parts horrifying and hillarious, Manning sets the stage in this first trade, establishing a town where something has gone very, very wrong. Collecting the sold-out first four issues of the series, here's what people are saying about Runoff: Chapter One:
"There are many compelling elements that propel the reader through the pages
of Runoff: brutal murders, metaphysical mysteries, small town politics, helper monkeys – but perhaps the most thrilling is Tom's own restless experimentation with comics storytelling. Acquaint yourself with this new talent while he's fresh and raw and bloody."
–Joel Priddy
Eisner nominated creator of 2002's Pulpatoon Pilgrimage
"If you miss The Twilight Zone or The X-Files, then you should definitely read Runoff, a disturbing tale that mixes reality with unlikely in one believable package."
–Jennifer M. Contino of Sequential Tart and Pulse
