The Cartoon Art Museum is proud to offer two companion exhibitions in celebration of the Seussentennial, the100th birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss.
Happy Hundredth, Dr. Seuss! - To think that it's happening on Mission Street! A host of fanciful creatures gather in celebration of their creator's 100th birthday at the Cartoon Art Museum. This exhibition stars 25 original works by Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991), production art from Dr. Seuss's animated specials, and vintage Seuss artifacts, on display from February 20 June 20. See rare, early original drawings and paintings by one of America¹s most beloved storytellers and cartoon artists: incredible insects, feathered flocks and animated animals, including the Grinch and the Cat in the Hat. All demonstrate the enduring ingenuity and artistry of Dr. Seuss.
The Art of Dr. Seuss - This exhibition chronicles a side of Dr. Seuss that most readers have never seen. You'll discover Seussian imagery from every facet of his varied career, including rare early works and poetry, advertising works, WWII editorial cartoons, magazine covers from the 1920s and 1930s, his collection of unorthodox taxidermy, the Secret Art, and never-before-seen works from Seuss's personal archives. This special touring exhibition will only be on display for a limited period of time, from March 5 to April 10. In addition to providing an overview of Dr. Seuss's life and art, it will include hand-pulled serigraphs from the Secret Art collection, special limited edition prints of his children's book illustrations and examples of his unique sculptures. This exhibition was produced and organized by the Chase Group with the help of the Dennis Rae Fine Art in San Francisco and Peabody Fine Art in Menlo Park.
Opening Reception: In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Dr. Seuss's birth, local celebrities and cartoonists will read their favorite Seuss stories at the Cartoon Art Museum on Friday, March 5 starting at 7 pm. There will be refreshments and activities for kids of all ages. Tickets to the event are $10 (CAM members $5); admission is free for children 8 and under. A full-color 16-page catalogue for the The Art of Dr. Seuss exhibition is included with your ticket purchase. This event is sponsored in part by Whole Foods. All proceeds to benefit the Cartoon Art Museum.
