[comix] NEW VOGELEIN GRAPHIC NOVEL AVAILABLE

From Jane Irwin:

Vogelein: Clockwork Faerie is appearing in this month's Previews magazine from Diamond Comic Distributors. If you didn't get a chance to pre-order your copy, now is a great time to go to your local comics store and ask them to order a copy of the trade paperback for you. It's always a good idea to order comics from your local shop, because that keeps everyone in the distribution chain in business. I get paid, the comics store gets paid, and Diamond gets to see that a whole lot of people like my little faerie book – everybody's happy! And heck, even if you did pre-order, and you know that others at your local comic store might be interested in the book, I'd really truly appreciate it if you could mention Vogelein to your local retailer. Vogelein's success so far has depended entirely on the support of fans like you guys, and you've done a magnificent job so far of letting retailers and other readers know about the series. I appreciate the help of everyone who's lent a hand so far.

Here's all the information you'll need to have your local comics store order you a copy:
Title: Vogelein: Clockwork Faerie
Publisher: Fiery Studios
On page 317 of the August 2003 Previews
Order Number AUG032277
Price: $12.50 usd / $15.95 cdn

If you don't know where to find a comics store near you, I reccommend that you visit the excellent site The Master List at http://www.the-master-list.com.

[comix] UPCOMING FROM L'ASSOCIATION

From Bart Beaty, courtesy of The Comics Journal Message Board:

L'Association sent around their latest update and since this stuff never really finds its way to these parts, I thought I'd summarize what they're doing for the rest of the year.

August - Persepolis 4 by Marjane Satrapi. Final book in the series, which is being pre-published right now in Liberation.

September - Matti Hagelberg: Le Sultan de Vénus. 108 pages of inexplicable strangeness from the Finnish master of disaster.

Also in September, four from the Collection Mimolette (small, US comic book sized books) by Vincent Vanoli, Denis Jourdin, Francois Ayroles (looks like a collection of his talking strips from Lapin, which I love), and Mélaka (who?)

October - L'Ascension du Haut-Mal. 88 pages. It's finally coming.

Also, Joann Sfar gives us Piano, probably about 400 pages, just so that he can publish more than 1000 pages of diary comics in 2003 (not a joke)

Lewis Trondheim presents Bleu, 40 pages of experimental non-figurative comics, likely akin to what he published in Bile Noire 13 which came out last month.

November - OuBaPo 4. I'm writing something on OuBaPo for TCJ right this very minute (no, really, I'm half done). Should I wait?

Also, Quimby the Mouse translation from Ware and Massimo Mattioli translation of M. le Magicien

For 2004, some highlights will include:

The second edition of Chemin de Saint-Jean by Baudoin, now with 40 additional pages. A new Dominique Goblet book in May (Faire Semblant c'est mentir) and a 365-page diary comic from Julie Doucet. Plus L'Association goes to India, and a new collection (Archives) will dredge up the past of the six founding members, starting with Stanislas. Baudoin's Futuropolis books will be brought back into print. Plus new books from Woodring, Blanquet, Max Andersson, J-C Forest, Lewis Trondheim and on and on and on.

[event:comix] SHIGA, KIRK KIM AND JO READING IN SAN FRANCISCO JULY 23

"Warning: Graphic Contents"
Graphic novelists and writers read from their comics in creative ways

with JASON SHIGA, DEREK KIRK KIM, and HELLEN JO
presented with the Chinatown Community Arts Program

JULY 23

CCAP Gallery
750 Kearny Street, between Clay and Washington
(Holiday Inn building, 3rd Floor, San Francisco)

6.30 - 8.30PM
Free and open to the public.

For more information, please contact info@kearnystreet.org or 415.503.0520.

About the artists:

HELLEN JO writes, draws, and xeroxes the perennially lame komisches buch, as well as an angry, untitled monthly comic for hardboiled, a UC Berkeley APA political news periodical. She has been spotted making out with a cardboard dummy of herself at local Clarendon Hills, Skyflakes, and Knulla Roofs shows. She is currently struggling to complete komisches buch no.3, a comic/cd split collaboration with the Clarendon Hills, but she is really mean and lazy and difficult to work with. Hellen also pretends to go to college, but please, who would believe that? http://hellen.gq.nu

DEREK KIRK KIM was born in Kumi, South Korea in 1974, and has been writing and drawing as far back as he can remember. He came to the United States when he was 8, leaving behind a deceased father. He studied at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and immediately began a career in comics upon leaving. For the past three years, he has been serializing deeply personal, poignant, and often hilarious short stories at his website, smallstoriesonline.com. Most recently, he has released a book collecting many of the aforementioned short stories entitled Same Difference and Other Stories. He likes Tabasco sauce on everything.

JASON SHIGA was born in Berkeley, went to high school in Berkeley and graduated from UC Berkeley. He now lives in Oakland. He is the author of over 20 comic books, 5 board games and 1 card game. He has created the world's second largest interactive comic. His comic strips have been cancelled from two different local newspapers. He is the only one of his coworkers at the library that can program the function keys. He has accomplished much, yet there remains a void in his seemingly happy life.

[comix] RICH TOMMASO'S 8½ GHOSTS IN DECEMBER FROM ALTERNATIVE

8 1/2 Ghosts

Gainesville, Florida, July 12, 2003: Alternative Comics has announced that it will release cartoonist Rich Tommaso’s 8½ Ghosts in December 2003.

8½ Ghosts
Paul Massina is a B-movie hack who knows he could become an A-list director, if only the studios would kick in more funding for his new horror film. But Fate hands him the perfect low budget prop — an enormous Victorian home, haunted by eight real ghosts! Once Paul has convinced the spectres to perform in his film, all he has to do is keep his actors calm and his film costs low. But what about that ½ ghost at the story’s end...? Rich Tommaso's newest comic, complete in one issue, might be described as a cross between Fellini's 8½ and William Castle's 13 Ghosts as reimagined by Jack Cole — but we think you'll agree there's never been anything like it!
By Rich Tommaso, Deluxe oversized 7½” x 11½”, 24pg, $3.95, ISBN 1-891867-45-8

Rich Tommaso was a student of The Joe Kubert Art School where he learned many techniques that he still today puts to use in his comics. He learned other things there that he would never put to use in his comics as well. He quit school after his first year there, never being interested in a career drawing superheroes and instead spent many years making pizza while trying to find more personal things to write and draw about. In this area, he has been mildly successful, sometimes focusing his stories upon his own life experiences, while other times falling back on just “making things up.” He’s worked for many companies such as: Fantagraphics, Top Shelf, and Dark Horse and became fed-up with bouncing around from one to the other until he finally found a home in 2003 at Alternative Comics.

[comix] MICHAEL CHABON BRINGS KAVALIER & CLAY-INSPIRED PROJECT TO DARK HORSE

Pulitzer-prize winning author Michael Chabon has signed on with Dark Horse Comics to publish Michael Chabon Presents…The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist. The quarterly comic anthology will feature characters created by Chabon in his critically acclaimed, Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.

Set primarily in the late ’30s and early ’40s at the birth of the comic book industry, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay tells the story of two young men who create a popular comic-book character known as “The Escapist.” The Dark Horse anthology will present tales of the Escapist and his cohorts set in the style of various comic book eras from the '40s through today. Chabon will guide the direction of the series as well as contribute to writing original stories. Other artists and writers will be announced in coming months.

“When I first began my research into the careers of Joe Kavalier & Sam Clay, their classic creations – the Escapist, Luna Moth and the rest – had lapsed into near-total obscurity,” commented writer Michael Chabon. "I'm delighted and very grateful that Dark Horse has decided to breathe new life into these grand old characters, and that we have the opportunity to continue the Escapist's good work using the Golden Keys of imagination and storytelling.”

“This is a very exciting project for Dark Horse,” enthused Dark Horse President Mike Richardson. “Presenting the work of such a talented and esteemed author such as Mr. Chabon continues our tradition of releasing the finest books by the industry’s top talent. Bringing his wonderful characters featured in The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist to life on the comics’ page is a true honor. Comics fans are in for a real treat!”

Michael Chabon has penned the script for the movie adaptation of his novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay for Scott Rudin Prods. and Paramount Pictures. The project re-teams Rudin and the author, who worked together on the film Wonder Boys. Chabon was repped on the deal by Harris Miller.

Chabon’s impressive list of other works includes The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, A Model World, Wonder Boys, Summerland and Werewolves in Their Youth. His work has appeared in the New Yorker, Harper’s, Esquire, and Playboy, among other places, and in a number of anthologies, among them Prize Stories 1999: The O. Henry Awards and Best American Short Stories 2002. His most recent project was guest editing and contributing to McSweeney's #10, AKA McSweeney's Mammoth Treasury of Thrilling Tales. He lives in Berkeley, California with his wife Ayelet Waldman, also a novelist, and their children.

Michael Chabon Presents…The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist is scheduled for release December 2003. Each exciting issue will be 80 pages long! Visit Darkhorse.com for the latest developments and updates on this project.

Don’t miss Michael Chabon signing a special Escapist promotional poster with art by Howard Chaykin in the Dark Horse booth at the San Diego Comic-Con next week!

[drag] NOT NEWS, BUT AN UPDATE

From your humble editor: My computer seems to have bitten the dust. In fact, the only reason I'm able to post this is because I'm out of town at the moment. Please forgive any uneven posting over the next couple of weeks or so until I get my computer woes resolved. I'll either have to pay to have it fixed or buy a new one, so here's hoping I soon retrieve some millionaire's favorite hat when it blows off of his head on a windy day. Thanks for your patience.
