New online comics at TopShelfComix.com:

With this on-line update, Top Shelf teams with the Flemish comics collective Pulp Deluxe to start reproducing work from their website in English. Pulp Deluxe is an amazingly hip and free website showcasing exclusive short comics by Flemish artists. It was conceived to demonstrate that Flemish cartoonists can draw more than just "funny books" (which have traditionally dominated the Belgian and, more specifically, the Flemish comic book markets), and we're showcasing two of their stories at the Top Shelf website this month:

-- GEOGLYPH by Lode Devroe, &
-- THE RIVER by Randall Caesar

Other new comix debuting at the Top Shelf website include:

-- BALTHAZAR AND OTHER STORIES by Don King
-- MONKEY MIND by Jay Lynch and Ed Piskor
-- PERCEVIL by Farel Dalrymple, &
-- WAY OFF MAIN #2 by Josue Menjivar and Scott Malin

FREDO GETS THE SMALL PRESS SPOTLIGHT

Small Press Spotlight
featuring Fredo

Opens September 25, 2004
Cartoon Art Museum, San Francisco

Beginning on September 25, 2004, the Cartoon Art Museum's ongoing Small Press Spotlight will feature the art of Frederick Noland, who publishes comics under the name Fredo. This showcase features highlights from Fredo's long career as an award-winning independent cartoonist.

Fredo was awarded the prestigious Xeric Grant in 2000, which he used to self-publish Shpilkes, a one-man anthology comic that runs the gamut from autobiography to workaday extraterrestrials to the roots music/comic crossover "Stagger Lee". A second anthology in 2002 featured longer, more realized vignettes, marked by Fredo's preoccupation with the downtrodden, disenfranchised and degenerate.

Since 2002, Fredo has published work in several comics anthologies, including the Penny Dreadful Travel Guides, Not My Small Diary and Legal Action Comics. His extensive freelance illustration work includes regular contributions to the Bay Area's Kitchen Sink Magazine and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund periodical Busted.

Most recently, Fredo has completed two volumes of a mini-comics trilogy exploring the dirty underbelly of the collective American subconscious, begun in 2003 with Fellowship and continuing with this year's Southern Blues/Gothic story Midnight Creep. Spring 2005 will see Fredo's return to full-size publications with Black Sheep, a continuing series published under his own Post Apocalyptic Funhouse imprint.

Fredo lives in Oakland with his lovely wife of three years, Vanessa, an accomplished visual artist, and their two cats Eno and Julia, who don't do much of anything aside from occasionally redecorating the litter box.

To view additional works by Fredo, please visit his website.

About the Small Press Spotlight:
San Francisco has been a hotbed of innovative, groundbreaking comic art since the late 1800s with the advent of the modern comic strip. In the 1960s, the Bay Area gained further notoriety when cartoonists like Robert Crumb, Spain Rodriguez, Victor Moscoso, and Trina Robbins launched the underground comix movement from San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. Today, some of the biggest names in alternative and small-press comics hail from the Bay Area, and The Cartoon Art Museum's Small Press Spotlight will focus on these talented individuals.

The Small Press Spotlight features four different artists each year. Several examples of each cartoonist's work will be showcased in each installment.

ZINE WORLD SEEKING NEWS WRITERS

Zine World is seeking writers for our news section. We'll give you an assignment and a source or two to get you started; you do a little research and write up a ZW-worthy article by the assigned deadline.

We get lots of praise for our news section, for its focus on our nation's war on dissent and free speech, for highlighting the underreported stories about zero tolerance policies and privacy issues, for keeping a close eye on the media. We need your help in keeping it tip-top.

If you're a good writer who has a passion for these issues, get in touch ASAP. We're hard at work on our next issue. Send an e-mail about yourself to Jerianne.

SALGOOD SAM'S REVOLVER DRAWN

RevolveR

RevolveR One: Sequential Tectonic Shift
Themes of identity, loneliness, homelessness, heredity, of finding our place in life, our perceptions of our selves, of others – basic ingredients of the human condition - are explored in RevolveR, the new ongoing comic book from Salgood Sam, also known as Canadian artist Max Douglas.

A collection of short works and the first installments of longer ongoing stories by Salgood Sam with guest authors a.j.duric and John O'Brien, RevolveR is at times introspective, melancholic and hopeful in its pursuit of truth and understanding.

A vehicle for telling stories, RevolveR is also a test-bed for the medium of Sequential Art and dedicated to stretching the artform through the refinement of old techniques and development of new ones. Hopefully in the process helping to expand the syntax and structure of sequential narrative art.

Salgood Sam's RevolveR represents a coming-out of sorts. The first volley of a creator who has found his stride and is ready to share the results with the world.

52 pages, B&W interiors, two-colour silk-screened covers on black cover stock. A limited first edition of 700. The first 100 will be numbered. Available online @ www.revolvercomix.com by mail order - $4.95 us, $6.95 can + shipping
