[event:comix] SLAVE LABOR GRAPHICS OFFERS CREATOR WORKSHOP IN SAN JOSE, NOVEMBER 15

San Jose, Calif. – On November 15, 2003, independent comic book publisher Slave Labor Graphics will hold the first in what it hopes to be a series of workshops designed to help aspiring comic book creators learn a little more about the craft of creating comic books. The Creator's Studio workshop will be held from one p.m. until five p.m. in the lavish SLG office/warehouse complex located at 577 S. Market Street, San Jose, CA 95113.

The Creator's Studio will consist of several question-and-answer interview sessions with long-time SLG creators, conducted by company President and Publisher Dan Vado. Creators confirmed as attending the first workshop include:

Serena Valentino - The writer of GloomCookie and Nightmares & Fairy Tales will answer questions about plotting and story arc development, as well as script-writing.

Landry Walker and Eric Jones - The creative team behind Little Gloomy, X-Ray and several comic strip series which have appeared in Disney Adventures will discuss visual storytelling and creating comics for a general audience versus creating for a more adult audience.

Scott Saavedra - SLG Art Director and the creator behind Comic Book Heaven, Dr. Radium and Java Town will talk about graphic design and cover design.

Since SLG has long made its mark in the comic book industry by discovering and publishing new talent, President and Publisher Dan Vado decided that the time was right to create an educational event. "At every convention SLG goes to, it seems like both the creators and the staff are overwhelmed with people who have questions about how-to kinds of things, or just want advice," he said. "Sadly, because of their hectic nature, conventions are the worst environment for answering these kinds of questions. By setting up an event geared towards educating people, I'm hoping we can give aspiring creators more to chew on than the standard 'keep working' response."

Both Vado and SLG Editor-In-Chief Jennifer de Guzman will be on hand to review portfolios; however, pitches will not be heard. "I want to focus this thing on education and learning new things. I don't think we can accomplish that by sitting down and listening to people pitch," added Vado. "While people are welcome to leave behind submissions for us to review later, I don't want the workshop turning into a big pitch session. That would be an event all its own." Vado also added that, due to time constraints, neither he nor EIC de Guzman would be able to read scripts.

Vado hopes that this Creator's Studio will generate enough interest and benefit aspiring comics creators enough to warrant future workshops. Each of these events would focus on different aspects of comic book creation, with topics ranging from proposal preparation to digital production. Admission to the workshops will be free and open to anyone who wishes to attend. However, seating will be limited, and advance registration will be required. Interested parties may register by calling 1-800-866-8929 and can keep informed about any changes or additional information by visiting SLG's website at www.slavelabor.com.
