[comix:online] MODERN TALES
ANNOUNCES NEW HOSTING/AUTOMATION SERVICE FOR COMICS CREATORS
Modern Tales, the leading subscription-based webcomics provider, announced today that it will be launching a new web hosting and automation service, designed specifically for comics creators, in September.
Unlike Modern Tales and its sister sites, which are very highly selective, edited "anthology publications," WebcomicsNation.com will be open to all cartoonists.
Modern Tales publisher Joey Manley said, "The service will be ideal for those cartoonists who are considering jumping onto the webcomics bandwagon, but who are not particularly adept at developing websites, or who don't want to have to log in every night at midnight to update their daily strip. Those cartoonists who wish to try to make a little money with their online comics will be especially well-served by signing onto WebcomicsNation.com: all the necessary programming and back-end database work for you to sell subscriptions to your content, or to sell individual pieces of work via micropayment, will be already in place. All you have to do is make your comics.
"Modern Tales, with its thousands of subscribers, has proven that people will actually pay for webcomics. Our agenda has always been to grow the webcomics industry (and, by extension, the comics industry). By making the tools we have developed for our own use available to one and all, we hope to continue to push commercial webcomics forward."
Webcomicsnation.com will use the next version of the Modern Tales site engine, and will include a full-featured portal organizing, promoting, and spotlighting the hosted comics, as well as a database-driven control panel where cartoonists can schedule their comics and make use of the service's other features.
The price will be $4.95/month for basic service, with incremental upgrades for extra bandwidth, extra disk space, and other features.
The company is actively soliciting cartoonists to participate in a small beta test of the service prior to launch.
Said Manley, "Your responsibility as a beta tester will be to help me make sure that the service meets the needs of cartoonists. While beta testers who know a lot about web development are welcome, utter newbies to the medium are our real market, and would be very welcome indeed as beta testers.
"You will participate in an online mailing list for beta testers, report bugs, and offer solutions. Beta testers who are helpful will be given free lifetime accounts to the service. Beta testers who are not helpful will be dropped from the project."
Interested cartoonists may sign up for the beta program at the WebcomicsNation.com homepage:
