[comix] STRIPBURGER
GOES TO WAR
"They say that war is hell… Which probably is true, but – unfortunately – you begin to realize this only when it starts to affect you. Almost all European societies were severely shaken by the wars of the past 100 years or so..."
- from the introduction by Aleksandar Zograf
With the year 2003
Stripburger entered its second decade of activity. After a special anti-nazi issue, issues on human rights, ecology, disablement, sex and madness,
Stripburger now took a journey to the most horrible field of them all: WAR.
In cooperation with the Peace Institute we have put up a public comic strip competition that closed at the end of April. Over 200 artists from the USA, Canada, Brazil, Europe, Korea, Israel and New Zealand responded. The
Stripburger editorial board along with the Peace Institute representative have handpicked works of 90 artists (including illustrations and accompanying text) and published them in a comic book anthology titled
Warburger – a 400 B&W page anthology with a special supplement: anti-war stickers depicting works of 4 artists and an introduction by Sasa Razekic a.k.a. Aleksander Zograf, a Serbian comic strip artist and essayist.
Warburger also includes addresses and contacts of all the featured artists. The cover was contributed by French artist Stéphane Blanquet.
The first presentation of
Warburger was an exhibition of some of the works from the authors from Eastern Europe, which took place at the annual Trnfest festival in Cultural & Arts Center KUD France Preseren in Ljubljana. The exhibition, which was running from July 29th to August 11th, featured these artists:
Andreja Kladnik, Koco, Matej Lavrencic, Primoz Krasna, Srp, Andrej Stular, Ziga Aljaz, David Krancan (Slovenia), Danijel Zezelj (CRO/USA), Miroslav Nemeth (CRO), January Misiak (PL), Veiko Tammjarv, Jonas Sildre (EE), Vladan Nikolic, Mr. Stocca (SCG), Vhrsti (CZ), Branko Jelinek (SK)...
The next promotional stand will take place at the
Berliner Comicfestival. The opening of the exhibition is on August 28th. The exhibition will be accompanied by Igor Prassel and Ivan Mitrevski from the
Stripburger editorial staff and also by artists Primoz Krasna (Slovenia), Miroslav Nemeth (Croatia) and Joonas Sildre (Estonia). Afterwards you can have a drink with the invited artists and other guests at Warburger-Plaque-Monogatari Monster party, which will occur later that day. The exhibition includes original artworks from previously mentioned East European artists (plus Mateusz Skutnik (PL)) and their German counterparts that have been included in
Warburger.
Last but not least, here are the winners of our contest! After a fierce discussion, the editorial board awarded these artists: Maaike Hartjes (NL), Ulli Lust (DE), Mawil (DE), Knut Larsson (SE), Miroslav Nemeth (HR), Veiko Tammjärv (EE), Choi Juhyun (KR/FR).
