[comix] MEPHISTO AND THE EMPTY BOX
FILM OPTION RENEWED
The new Hollywood powerhouse, Singer/Jensen Entertainment, has renewed their option for the critically acclaimed comic book
Mephisto and the Empty Box. The comic, written by Jason Hall and illustrated by Matt Kindt, is from well-renowned indy comic publisher Top Shelf Productions and is part of the creators' twice Harvey Award nominated
Pistolwhip series of books. The story involves a couple with a troubled marriage that attends a magic show. The woman volunteers for the disappearing act, but the magician (Mephisto) dies in the middle of the trick. With the wife missing, the husband embarks on a dark metaphysical journey to bring her back. The screenplay for
Mephisto is being written by Michael Browning (
Bad Company,
Six Days, Seven Nights), and the first draft is in the final stages of completion.
"We couldn't be happier," co-creators Hall and Kindt said. "It's always rewarding to see your work getting so much positive attention. And we hope that a
Mephisto movie will only help in spreading the word about the comics themselves."
Both
Pistolwhip and
Mephisto were named
Wizard Magazine's Best Indy Comics of 2001 and were included on the prestigious
Time Magazine's Top Ten Comics of 2001 list. The new graphic novel,
Pistolwhip: The Yellow Menace, is already garnering critical acclaim –
Publisher's Weekly calls the book "a tight story", saying it's "a showcase for the skill, grace and charm of Top Shelf's newest dynamic duo."
The 4th Rail says it's "a deep and complex story that is full of artistic merit and 'indy cred' as well as lots of good old fashioned fun."
iCOMICS says it's "another great success from Hall and Kindt; it's great to see that not only do they still have it, but they keep getting better with each new project."
UHF Comics raves, "We couldn't turn the pages fast enough with this one, and read it all over again as soon as we were done – it's really that good!" And
Artbomb says the book "is a blast from start to finish" and that it "absolutely shines".
All three
Pistolwhip books are available from Diamond Comics Distributors and are resolicited in the June
Previews (pgs. 365-366), with
Pistolwhip: The Yellow Menace named as a "Graphic Novel in the Spotlight" (pg. 376). The books are also available from Mars Imports, Cold Cut Distribution, or directly from Top Shelf Productions.
