[event:comix] ALTERNATIVE STRIP CARTOONISTS EXHIBIT AT CARTOON ART MUSEUM

Alternative to What?
Comic Art of the Free Weeklies

June 14-October 5, 2003

Since the debut of The Village Voice in 1955, alternative weekly newspapers have provided readers with news and opinions not typically found in the mainstream media. Operating under a unique set of editorial guidelines, these free newsweeklies offer a distinctive take on current events, both in their approach and in their choice of coverage. It should come as no surprise, then, that this decidedly different form of newspaper would spawn a decidedly different form of newspaper cartoon.

Alternative to What? examines the work of some of today?s most talented alternative newspaper cartoonists and the groundbreaking comics that they have created. Utilizing a format and a forum unlike that of typical daily comic-strip cartoonists, these artists have produced some of the most inspired and thought-provoking comics in the medium today, with subject matter ranging from the personal to the political to the truly bizarre.

The artists featured in this exhibition are Lalo Alcaraz (Cartoonista), Ruben Bolling (Tom the Dancing Bug), Max Cannon (Red Meat), Lloyd Dangle (Troubletown), Derf (The City), Jules Feiffer (Feiffer), Sam Henderson (The Magic Whistle), Ben Katchor (Julius Knipl), Kaz (Underworld), Keith Knight (The 'K' Chronicles, (th)ink), Carol Lay (Story Minute), Tony Millionaire (Maakies), Nina Paley (Nina's Adventures) and Tom Tomorrow (This Modern World).

Alternative to What? will be on display at the Cartoon Art Museum from June 14 to October 5, 2003. The date and time of the opening reception for this exhibition and the upcoming Great Comic Cats will be announced shortly.
